“This book is brimming with heart and healing, and it is a moody, visual feast that will leave you feeling full in the best way possible.”—Justina Blakeney, designer, author, and founder of Jungalow
Before she became an internationally renowned designer and photographer, Carley Summers suffered from alcoholism and addiction, spending nights in jail, the emergency room, and rehab. As someone who celebrates recovery today, she knows firsthand the importance of a warm and inviting home. Summers uses her life experience and her craft to ensure that the homes she photographs and designs are comforting, healing spaces to live and grow in.
Sacred Spaces takes readers on a beautifully photographed journey inside fourteen homes, from North Carolina and California to Canada, France, and Morocco, as Summers uncovers the vulnerable stories behind each one: a mother who uses her kitchen to heal her son with food, a woman who found her sanctuary after overcoming childhood abuse, and more. She even offers a tour of her mother’s home and her own. Along the way, each section identifies a type of space that people have created, including
• The Foundational Home, which features those who have created spaces on a solid foundation for a lasting legacy
• The Wandering Home, which highlights people who were lost in life, lost in travels, but never lost in their home
• The Cathartic Home, which showcases people who realize that when they cannot change the outside world, they can change the inside of their homes to bring comfort through renewal and restoration
This collection is a balm for those seeking refuge in a world fraught with struggle and heartache. Through stories of brokenness, hurt, and healing, Sacred Spaces invites readers to dream of the home that will set them free.

Super brilliant concept for a design book. I’ve read other design books that take you thru multiple people’s homes etc. But this one has an interest and depth like no other design book I’ve seen. It still takes you thru different people’s homes, but the author asks the right questions and relays her conversation to the public thru this book so delightfully. WORTH YOUR TIME AND MONEY in my opinion. I would purchase again to gift out to people. The stories are captivating, written out beautifully, and photography is lush. I will look for more by this author.

Its a great book with a great concept and I would have enjoyed the interviews a lot more had they been accompanied by good photographs, the pics are dark and dingy, in a lot of them its hard to make out what is even happening, The sad part is the authoress is a photographer herself !!!! Better luck for your next book, one star because effort has been put in the interviews.

Sacred Spaces is an incredible book. I’ve known Carley for a couple of years, and we share a passion for flowers. Even knowing her, and knowing about some of her life trials and victories, I really didn’t know what to expect until I read the book. The photography and these homes are amazing, but the way Carley tells the story of the life journeys each person or family experienced in making their home a sacred space is hard for me to describe in one sentence. The homes are in the US, Canada, Morocco, Guatemala, UK, and France. Carley’s home and story is included, as well as her mom’s. The individuals represent different ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds but Carley says it best: “every story deserves a seat at the table. Every story has worth and value. Our stories are what link us together – exposing our humanity.” The stories were all so different but the vulnerability of these individuals in sharing what they went through in life to end up making their home such a sacred space is incredible and is a common thread throughout. I think vulnerabilities are something everyone around the world can identify with but maybe we don’t share or say our own out loud to anyone very much. So as you read, you are thinking “wow, I can’t believe they went through this” but at the same time “wow, how gracious and trusting of them to share this.” Some of the journeys were sad and even hard to read. Some made me cry. Some had funny moments and made me laugh. All were inspiring. And in the end, how incredibly hopeful to see them come out the other side. Job well done Carley! Can’t wait to see what comes next!!
